If you’re about to have wisdom tooth extraction surgery, you may have some questions about recovery and what you should and shouldn’t do in order to have the best wisdom teeth removal recovery possible.
At Tumut Dental Clinic, we are a caring, family-friendly dental centre that offers comprehensive dental services, so our team is completely understanding if you feel nervous or unsure.
How To Speed Up The Healing?
When you get a wisdom tooth removed, you will need to take some time to recover from it. But how long will recovery take, and can it be sped up? The best way to speed up wisdom tooth removal healing is to follow the directions from your dentist.
That being said, there are certain things you may be able to do in order to speed up your recovery time. You will still need some downtime after getting your wisdom teeth pulled, but taking the right precautions may see you being able to get back on your feet quicker.
For speedy healing from wisdom teeth removal surgery, our Tumut dentists recommend you to:
- Get plenty of rest, and keep your head elevated.
- Follow the directions you are given about pain medication.
- Use ice packs for the first 48 hours, then switch to warm packs.
- After 24 hours have passed, begin to rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day.
- Consume only liquids and soft foods for at least a couple of days.
It is also incredibly important that you don’t dislodge the blood clots that will form at the wisdom tooth extraction site, as these will protect the exposed bone and tissue. You can greatly reduce the risk of this happening if you:
- Don’t brush near the extraction site.
- Don’t eat any foods that are sticky, crunchy, hard, or chewy.
- Don’t drink any beverages through a straw.
- Don’t spit or vigorously swish liquids in your mouth.
- Don’t smoke or drink alcohol.
The most important thing is that you follow your oral surgeon’s aftercare instructions, as they will be able to give you personalised advice.
